Encountering a black screen post-login that resolves itself only to leave you with restricted access to essential system applications can be alarming and indicative of a serious issue, possibly a malware infection. This guide will help you address these symptoms, determine the cause, and restore functionality to your PC.

Potential Causes and Initial Steps

This problem can stem from various sources, including malware infections, system file corruption, or issues with user account permissions. Start by addressing the most common factors:

  1. Safe Mode: Restart your computer in Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. Safe Mode loads Windows with a minimal set of drivers and can help you troubleshoot problems. To enter Safe Mode:
    • Restart your computer and press the F8 key (or Shift + F8 on some systems) repeatedly as it boots.
    • Select ‘Safe Mode with Networking’ to enable internet access.
  2. Check for Virus and Malware: Once in Safe Mode, run a comprehensive scan with Gridinsoft Anti-Malware to detect and remove any malware. This tool can effectively identify and eliminate malware that might be causing system restrictions.
  3. System File Checker (SFC): Run the System File Checker to repair corrupted system files that could be causing the black screen and access issues. Open Command Prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

  2. Check Disk Utility: Run a check disk scan to look for hard drive corruption.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and type chkdsk C: /f /r and press enter to schedule a disk check on reboot.
  3. Attempt System Restore: If you do not have any restore points, unfortunately, you cannot create one retroactively. However, if you manage to access System Restore, revert to a previous state before the issues began.
